Birthday Tea Party- Mandarin Oriental Lobby Lounge

Many of my peers would prefer to go out and party, making sure to drink absurd amounts of alcohol, but I opted for a more quiet, intimate gathering with a few of my favorite girls a few days before my actual birthday.

As I write this, I am now happy to say I’m officially 22!

I came across a blog: Oh, How Civilized, not too long ago and have spent hours scrolling through reviews on afternoon tea spots ever since. I knew that this is what I wanted to do the next time I had an occasion to do so, so of course, this is what I decided to do for my birthday. After reading Jee’s reviews and looking at her photos, I decided on the Mandarin Oriental because of it’s view. (As you may already know I am a sucker for a view).

Online reviews on Yelp, etc seemed a bit mixed but I have learned it is best to make your own judgments. Making a reservation online didn’t work (it said times were booked 2.5 hours before and after the time I wanted) but I was determined to get a reservation so I decided to call. After speaking to someone at the lobby lounge,  I was able to make a reservation within a matter of minutes! I was sure to tell them it was my birthday and to ask for a seat near the window.

The day of, I was greeted by a building that immediately transported me into a different world. It put me at ease almost instantly with its decor and ambience. I love a place that makes me feel like I’m not in New York if only for a few hours.

Once we got up to the 35th floor and headed towards our table, I was so excited to see this:

You know a view is nice when it can capture the attention of a toddler for more than 5 seconds!  I spotted this little cutie just glued to the window!IMG_5038

After taking (several) photos, we ordered the standard set and I tried the Mandarin blossom tea.

It doesn’t look or sound like a filling meal, but when you spend your time enjoying the savories and sandwiches  (the scones were my favorite) over some good laughs and conversation, you end up being filled with more than just afternoon tea.

I was expecting the sweets to come out the same way the first plates did, but instead, the server came out with a plate of sweets lit with a birthday candle! They had remembered it was my birthday from when I made the reservation, which was quite sweet (literally).IMG_5045Of Of course I made the most awesome wish ever.

Needless to say, I’m excited for a great 22nd year and working to make that wish come true. Maybe one day I’ll bring clients to afternoon tea for business meetings! So glad I came across her blog and so thankful she shared her experience! I couldn’t have thought of a better way to celebrate my 22nd birthday.

My friend even got me a teamaker from Teavana as a gift. I thought I wouldn’t like it (I’m quite picky with gifts) but now I try to drink a cup a day to relax and avoid overeating/oversnacking. Not to mention, the tea she got for me smells so good, its soothing!

If you had a summer birthday, Happy Birthday to you!! Even if you don’t, let’s work on making this year the best one yet. Let’s outdo ourselves.

Thankful for such great people who help make such great memories. I have to say this was the best birthday I’ve had so far.
