Not too long ago, I saw someone’s post about a “morning special” in Manhattan’s Koreatown. Since I found myself awake at 5 AM this morning, I figured today would be a good day to take advantage (and make an adventure out) of this morning special. I took my time getting ready, had a leisurely and comfortable commute into the city and got to New Wonjo in Ktwon by 7:30 AM.
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of breakfast. I eat it every morning sometime around 7 AM-730 AM. You’ve probably seen some photos of it on instagram. Breakfast really is the most important (and largest) meal for me. It energizes me and starts my day off well. Lately I’ve been craving Korean food (I’m actually Korean if you didn’t know) so I was so excited to have this for breakfast and just for $7.95!!!
I walked in to find two other people already having breakfast and throughout the meal, more and more people trickled in. Turns out I’m not the only person craving Korean first thing in the morning! The portion was a lot bigger than expected (in fact it was huge which I guess is typical of America) but needless to say, my craving was satisfied. When I was younger, I got made fun of for having big and non traditional breakfasts. I’ve grown to understand that everyone’s definition of a breakfast is different (it varies across cultures let alone by preference) and really, I’m just happy to be eating and enjoying food before work, not in a rushed environment or on the go or even worse, not even eating breakfast at all.
I ordered M5 which had a generous portion of clams inside the bean paste soup and it also came with gaeran jjim (계란찜). Eating this meal brought me back to the time I woke up to korean meals every day when I was in Korean years ago. It brought back homey feelings of my mothers cooking. I spent almost an hour eating and left with a full stomach and calm mind. I even got to work early! The only complaint I have is that the kimchi wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but then again it’s hard to compete against my mom’s homemade kimchi…
If you ever find that you can’t sleep, or happen to wake up really early, want to try something different for breakfast, or love that feeling of having completed a lot before some people have even woken up, then you should try this sometime.
But really, you should make every morning special.
